The Eastern regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress has complained that the Electoral Commission’s approach to this year's limited registration exercise in the Eastern Region is a "lazy" one and "must be a worry to all stakeholders."

In a press statement dsted Monday, 7 May 2024, Regional Secretary Jamal Konneh said: "Almost all the constituencies were not able to start registration today, 7 May, 2024 at the time given by the EC itself."

"As of 1pm on the first registration day, about 95% of constituencies in the Eastern Region had not started the exercise due to challenges best known to the EC alone", the statement said.

In the party's view, "This is a clear sign of the incompetent technical team of the EC who are sub-standard and can’t manage a transparent and incident free election process".

"It must be recalled how this same team managed our district-level elections last year with some districts having to postpone their elections to a later date", the statement mentioned.

The party said the situation is disturbing.
"Our elders say that if Saturday will be any better, it starts from Friday night. We all, as stakeholders, must be worried and concerned about the shadows being cast by the EC while we are preparing for a very crucial general election on December 7, 2024."

The NDC in the Eastern Region, according to the statement, "won't tolerate this lazy man approach tomorrow, since the registration exercise is time-bound and the timetable must be respected."

"They have to put their technical teams together and even seek help from stakeholders where necessary, in order to resolve all so-called technical challenges before the close of today so that a successful exercise can commerce tomorrow," the party warned.
