George Afriyie welcomes CAS decision to dismiss his appeal case

George Afriyie welcomes CAS decision to dismiss his appeal case
06 MAY 2024 LISTEN

George Afriyie, a former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has gracefully accepted the ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) affirming his disqualification from the 2023 GFA presidential candidacy.

Afriyie's disqualification paved the way for GFA President Kurt Okraku to run unopposed, as he fell short of securing the necessary endorsements from GFA members for his bid.

The Election Committee invalidated his candidacy due to his use of Jeffrey Asare, an unqualified individual, to endorse his nomination forms. It was revealed that Asare did not hold the position claimed on the forms at Victory Club Warriors FC.

Despite lodging an appeal, Afriyie's hopes were dashed when the appeal was turned down, prompting him to escalate the matter to CAS, the international body headquartered in Switzerland tasked with resolving sports-related disputes through arbitration.

In response to CAS's decision, Afriyie conveyed in a statement, "I have received the verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerning my appeal against the Decision of the Elections Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The CAS has upheld the Elections Committee's ruling. I accept the decision with grace and extend my heartfelt appreciation to all who stood by me during this period."

Meanwhile, George Afriyie has been directed by CAS to pay legal fees summing up to 1000 Swiss Francs (15,266 Ghana Cedis) in connection to the ruling.
